Our West Highland Train & Ferry Explorer package gives you the opportunity to customize this fun and independent touring package! Choose from different ferry day tours on three different days to get a complete and custom experience.

Tour Highlights

  • Seven (7) nights accommodation in a mixture of 3 * accommodation (hotels, inns and guest houses).
  • Breakfast daily (except for morning of arrival, Scottish or continental depending on the accommodations booked).

West Highland Train and Ferry Tour Includes

  • Four (4) Day Freedom of Scotland Travel Pass including handling fee and postage within the UK (train tickets are delivered to first hotel in Edinburgh). Tickets are based on standard class (valid on all trains except for travel before 9:15 am Mondays to Fridays, (with exception of trains between Glasgow-Oban/). NOT valid on the Jacobite Steam Train service between Mallaig- Fort William.
  • Three (3) ferry day tours - as selected.
  • All service charges and hotel taxes.

Additional Notes

All Ferry excursions mentioned must be pre-booked by the clients at least 65 days prior to travel. If not advised at 65 days prior to departure, options A, C and E will be selected for the traveler.

Clients might find that not all hotel accommodation booked is within walking distance from the station, comfortable to them. We recommend that all accommodation location is checked by the client in advance of their travel. Clients are responsible for their own transport to the hotel, where required.

It is the clients responsibility to ensure timely arrival at the stations to not miss trains. In some location there may be no alternative and any program changes and resulting charges from missed trains will be charged in full to the client.

Edinburgh requires a 2-night stay if it falls on Friday or Saturday night. With that tours that start on Friday, Saturday or Sunday are on request. Rates must be requested from the office in Edinburgh. Please call for details.

Itinerary

Day 01, Arrive Edinburgh

Arrival in Edinburgh. Make your way to your Edinburgh hotel (unless optional transfer was booked at time of booking). Check-in time at hotels is generally between 2pm and 4pm. For those arriving early, the hotel will hold your bags until your room is ready, giving you the opportunity to explore Edinburgh. You are free to explore Edinburgh today. Overnight in Edinburgh. (Note, your Freedom Train Pass will be waiting for you at your hotel).

Day 02, Edinburgh to Glasgow

Make your way to the train station (independently). Leave Edinburgh early and travel to Glasgow by Train. Arrive at Glasgow Queen Street Station. On arrival in Glasgow, you can store your luggage. Make your way (on foot) to the Ferry location, where while you embark on one of the previously selected day options chosen at time of reservation.

Your options for today (pre-booked at time of reservation) are:

Day trip to Bute/ Mount Stuart from Wemyss Bay (Option A) Discover award winning Mount Stuart, one of britain's most spectacular Victorian Gothic mansions and one of the world's great houses.

or

Day trip to Arran/ Brodick from Ardrossan (Option B) Sail to Arran, for a great day of history and heritage on a visit to beautiful Brodick Castle, garden & Country Park. This grand red sandstone baronial-style castle becomes Scotland's first island Country Park in 1980. Transport to the properties on the islands is included in the package. Connection time with the bus service may vary.

On return from your "ferry day out" - collect your luggage and make *your way to your pre-booked hotel.

A taxi may be needed to bring you to your hotel depending on it's location.

Day 03, Glasgow - Oban

Enjoy some sightseeing and shopping before departing Glasgow today. Make your way to the Glasgow Queen Street Station today and head by West Highland Line to Oban.

Trains depart Glasgow at 10:37 am or 12:21 am and arrive in Oban at 1:42 pm or 3:27 pm. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon and evening in the seafood capital of Scotland. You may also want to pay a visit to Oban Distillery which is set right in the centre of Oban. Take a stroll along the pier and visit Dunollie Castle. Overnight Oban.

Day 04, Oban - and touring options

Today you are embarking on one of these options (which you will choose at time at time of reservation):

Day out on Mull & Iona (option C). This tour takes you on a morning sailing to Craignure where you'll continue your scenic journey through the Isle of Mull to Fionnphort. From here you'll travel on to Iona, one of Scotland's most sacred and historic site.

or

Day out on Staffa & Treshnish Isles (option D) (supplement applies). Visit unique Staffa, best known for its fascinating caves and magnificent basalt columns and walk into Fingal's Cave. Get up close and personal to nature's wonders at harp rock, one of the most accessible seabird colonies off our coast.

Return back to Oban in the afternoon for overnight.

Day 05, Oban - Mallaig

The West Highland Line will take you away from Oban today and you will travel on one of the world's most scenic train routes, including the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, to the little harbor village of Mallaig. Depart Oban at 12:56 pm (Sun 12:11 pm), to arrive in Mallaig at 5.43 pm. Overnight in the beautiful small fishing port of Mallaig, overlooking the south side of the Isle of Skye.

Day 06, Mallaig and touring options

Today you are embarking on one of these options (which you will choose at time at time of reservation):

Day out on Skye & Clan Donald (option E) - here you will utilize your freedom of Scotland Rail Pass for this tour. Skye is the largest of the Inner Hebridean Islands, recently voted the 4th best island in the world by National Geographic magazine. Taking the ferry over to the island visit the magnificent Clan Donald Skye estate at Armadale with its 40 acre woodland garden and the imposing ruin of Armadale Castle and museum.

Day out with Small Isles Cruise (non-landing - option F) Enjoy this great non-landing day tour to the sublime beautiful Small Isles. Each day offers different island options, all with magnificent scenery and the chance to see some of the region's wonderfully rich and varied wildlife from the ferry, including porpoises, dolphins, seals and basking sharks. Relax and enjoy the views on this beautiful cruise. Overnight again in Mallaig.

Day 07, Mallaig - Edinburgh

It is time to leave the Highland and head back south. Depart Mallaig at 10:10 am and after a wonderfully relaxing and scenic journey you will arrive in Edinburgh at 4.36 pm. Enjoy your late afternoon and evening in Edinburgh, take a stroll through the streets and closes in the Old Town and reminisce over the experiences you have made over the past few days on the west coast of Scotland. Overnight in Edinburgh.

Day 08, departure

Optional transfer to Edinburgh Airport today for your return flight home.

Pricing

Your tour land price is per person based on two people sharing a twin or double room. When a single room is booked, a single supplement will apply. There are no triple rooms for this tour.

During the booking process, please select which option you wish to book. Options A or B on day 02, Options C or D on day 04 and Optional E and F on day 06. All Ferry excursions mentioned must be pre-booked by the clients at least 65 days prior to travel. If not advised at 65 days prior to departure, options A, C and E will be selected for the traveler.

This tour does not include:

  • Items not noted on itinerary
  • Lunches
  • Dinners
  • Transfers to/from hotels and train stations and ferry ports
  • Luggage storage in Glasgow
  • Visitor attractions

Airfare

Airfare is additional. Once you select your date, you will be given the opportunity to search our system for the best available airfare from your home city. The dates shown will the the start / end date of your tour. However, you can alter these dates to arrive earlier or extend your stay as needed.

Our system will search for the best possible airfare during your booking process. Note: airfare cannot be booked sooner than eleven (11) month from date of departure.

Departures & Transfers

Date selected would be the start date in Edinburgh.
