Day 05, Monday: Rome - Pompeii - Sorrento
Late morning transfer to Sorrento by private coach. En route stop and visit of Pompeii. Due to its healthy climate and pleasant scenery, Pompeii was a holiday resort for rich Romans. It is now famous for its civic buildings lining the streets that are still intact today. Some of these include the Surgeon’s House, as well as those of the Faun and the Chaste Lovers, which are exceptional examples of the epoch’s architecture. Another remarkable construction is the House of Mysteries, which derives its name from the murals depicting the initiation rites (i.e., the mysteries) of the Dionysian cult. A peculiar characteristic of Pompeii is the florid graffiti covering the walls in just about every building; this is because when the volcanic eruption happened, Pompeii was set to carry out elections in the days ahead, hence the writings and ideograms, which feature both political and sexual content. At the end, enjoy a light lunch and a wine tasting on the Vesuvio Volcano. From the wine estate you will enjoy the view of the entire Gulf of Naples with Capri, Ischia, Naples and other small villages on the coastline. Continue via the Sorrento Coast and overnight in Sorrento.
Day 06, Tuesday: Amalfi - Ravello
Full day tour of Amalfi & Ravello with a lemon tour on the cliffs of Amalfi. This excursion combines the fantastic landscapes of Ravello and Amalfi with the local culture of food and wines. In Amalfi, learn about the history of the city and the ancient Maritime Republics, then visit an incredible “limoneto”, a cliff where lemon trees are cultivated. Here we prepare fresh squeezed lemonade “Amalfi style”. We continue to Ravello, a destination for artists, musicians, and writers; including Richard Wagner who composed some of his operas here. Ravello is also famous for its villas, such as Villa Cimbrone, dating from at least the 11th century A.D. and Villa Rufolo. Overnight in Sorrento.
Day 07, Wednesday: Free day in Sorrento
Today enjoy a free day in Sorrento to explore independently. Overnight in Sorrento.
Day 08, Thursday: Matera
Begin your 3-night private post-tour to Apulia (from this moment, the tour continues on private basis, without tour escort. The tours included may be private) Meet your driver guide and transfer to Bari. En route stop in Matera for a guided visit. Stand in the right spot at a viewpoint overlooking Matera’s huddled sassi, and it’s not difficult to imagine you’ve been teleported back to the Holy Land circa 100 BC. At once epic and cinematic, the ‘Città Sotterranea’, as it’s known, perches on the upper reaches of the steep-sided Gravina gorge and its timeless urban landscape has often been used to evoke biblical scenes in films and TV. (Lonely Planet). Overnight in Bari area.
Day 09, Friday: Bari & Alberobello
Meet your driver and transfer to Lecce. En route stop in Alberobello. A lovely spread of pinnacles announces Alberobello's characteristic historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old town center is entirely composed of trulli, traditional drystone huts whitened with quicklime and capped by conical bare-stone roofs. Crosses, pierced hearts, and zodiac signs decorate the roofs, maintaining the air of mystery that surrounds the trulli. Overnight in Lecce.
Day 10, Saturday: Lecce
Half day guided visit of Lecce. Called “the Florence of the South”, Lecce welcomes visitors with its magnificent baroque architecture, which blazes on the portals of its palaces and on the facades of the many churches that line the streets inside the city's three ancient gates: Porta Rudiae, Porta San Biagio and Porta Napoli. The common factor in the city’s characteristic baroque exuberance is the local “Lecce stone”, so soft and malleable, that master stonecutters were able to create highly sophisticated stone embroidery. Overnight in Lecce.
Day 11, Sunday: Departure
Independent transfer to your airport or station.
